We set out from Missoula at 10:30 am with Mike Lessard of Adventure Cycling in tow for the first hour. Mike took Ezra out on a mountain bike ride yesterday, while the rest of the group watched movies and ate popcorn. They climbed up Sentinel (the M-Hill) and then descended at a tepid pace, resulting in ONLY two crashes.

While we usually get on the road while the sun is still low, Drummond is only a fifty mile ride from Missoula. Arlen, the tour coordinator, rightly advised us to leave as late as possible because besides from the rugged mountain scenery, there is nothing of interest in this town of 500. In an attempt to challenge his legs, Ezra did intervals on the rolling hills, imagining the many triathletes who would be unable to hold his exceptional pace for more than 30 seconds. To surmise, we had an easy day, filled with the beautiful yet monotonous landscape of Western Montana. Tomorrow we are riding to Butte, home to the Leipheimer bike shop which will hopefully have some relics from Levi’s long career on display.
